Trelleborg Sealing Solutions launches a spring-energized PTFE based seal the Turcon Variseal Ultra-Clean (14003)

Fort Wayne, Iniana - In many applications the open spring of the standard seal is acceptable. However, in food, beverage and pharmaceutical processing where cleanliness is paramount, the area of dead space around the spring where bacteria can potentially be caught can pose a risk of contamination. Trelleborg Sealing Solutions recognized the need to offer an enclosed Turcon® Variseal® design requiring the spring to activate. Considerable research and development work has resulted in this unique design, thus ensuring cleanliness throughout the process.

The Corrosion of Metal Equipment And Machinery in 1998 Exceeded $275 Billion (12954)

The direct cost of corrosion to metal equipment and machinery in the United States alone was estimated in 1998 to be $276 billion, which is more than 3% of the U.S. gross domestic product. The effects of corrosion are exacerbated by a phenomenon known as erosion, which is the wearing of solids usually by currents of wind, water, or ice. When corrosion occurs, a passive layer of oxide protects the surface. However, when this layer is eroded away by the environment, the surface is left bare and vulnerable to further corrosive attack. If this pattern continues, significant metal thickness can be lost in short order due to this erosion/corrosion cycle. There are various ways to prevent this catastrophe, including passivation, cathodic protection, and surface treatments such as coatings. Abrasion resistant coatings are used to protect and extend the life of various types of industrial equipment. Two types of abrasion exist: low angle sliding abrasion and direct impact abrasion. Both of these problems can lead to costly equipment damage which can be vastly reduced by applying protective materials.
